When keto diets can be unhealthy

Keto diets work for some people but for others it may be horrible and dangerous. There are many benefits however on the side of caution, I recommend people do so under medical supervision. Here is only a few reasons why.

Critics say the keto-type diets usually work only in the short term and can be unhealthy.

For starters, most of the lost weight is water weight, according to Lisa Cimperman, R.D.N., a clinical dietitian at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“Once your body enters ketosis, you also begin to lose muscle, become extremely fatigued, and eventually enter starvation mode. Then it actually becomes even harder to lose weight,” Cimperman told Healthline.

Other experts interviewed by Healthline had stronger words of caution.

“Keto diets should only be used under clinical supervision and only for brief periods,” Francine Blinten, R.D., a certified clinical nutritionist and public health consultant in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, told Healthline. “They have worked successfully on some cancer patients in conjunction with chemotherapy to shrink tumors and to reduce seizures among people suffering from epilepsy.”

In the general population, Blinten said a keto diet should only be considered in extreme cases.

“It can do more harm than good. It can damage the heart, which is also a muscle,” she explained.

Anyone with type 2 diabetes can benefit from weight loss and a reduced-carb diet because it will improve insulin sensitivity, Cimperman explained.

“But there are many other ways to do it besides a fad diet that won’t keep weight off long-term,” she said.

Blinten, who has used a keto diet for some cancer patients in specific circumstances, cautioned, “people will do anything to get the weight off.” However, a keto diet will do more harm than good for the majority of patients, especially if they have any underlying kidney or liver issues.

“People are using this for cosmetic reasons, but it’s so extreme that it’s dangerous,” she said.

I don’t know, it doesn’t sound natural for me and I have kidney issues. I’m not jumping on the Ketosis boat. And I have had gestational diabetes off and on in my life. I know the benefits that are claimed and proven or disproven, but I also take note of the cautions.

Ketosis is actually a mild form of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis mostly affects people with type 1 diabetes. In fact, it is the leading cause of death of people with diabetes who are under 24 years of age.

If anyone decides to try going into Ketosis, consider seeing a family doctor first who knows all about it and can give you a medical check up before, and during and after.

I tried it for 3 months to the tee! Got overweight and got sick, very low energy and foggy brained. Went off it, felt better and lost weight. Didn’t know it was bad for my kidneys, because my doctor said they weren’t operating optimally anymore. He told me to get off keto and no supplements or Advil. I have had kidney function issues for a decade that were exacerbated by Ketosis. I had too many ketones in the urine because kidneys weren’t filtering properly. Ketones came from too much red meat. My left kidney shut down in 2009 and the Ketosis made it flare again in 2018. Lab tests showed low functioning kidneys during Ketosis fad diet.

Greg got sick too. Mostly weak with low energy and always hungry. He lost weight too fast and went into starvation mode. He had to stop so he could gain weight a bit again.

I had a friend who tried it and “got sick very quickly and passed out”.

Another friend comments that: “Amee we know people have gone on the Keto diet yes they do loose a lot of weight fast but you are consuming a lot of animal meats and end result is that it pushes the cholesterol count way up so that in turn compromises the Heart. The couple we know that went on it were on it for about six months. They both say it had it’s challenges. You are allowed no sugar of any kind which i think is also no starches. So you are eating meat and vegetables that have no starches. It’s very limited.”

However, other people who do the keto diet have nothing but good things to say about it and a lot of research and treatments have proven it effective. Researchers also say that everybody responds differently to it. But for us, it’s a disaster waiting to happen and doesn’t serve my higher good.
